Syria. High Commissioner visits Jdeidet Yabous border crossing during country mission

From Deri-Ba’albah in Homs governorate, Syria, Qasem fled to Lebanon in 2013 in search of safety and settled in Sednaya, where he registered as a refugee. Qasem had been a university student in Syria, but was unable to complete his education in Lebanon and instead worked various daily wage jobs. His wife also fled to Lebanon in 2019, and they got married there. ; High Commissioner Filippo Grandi visited Syria in January 2025, and called on the international community to help Syrians rebuild their war-torn country and support displaced Syrians in returning home. In Damascus, Grandi met with the caretaker authorities, including the country's leader, Ahmed Al-Sharaa. Since September 2024, more than 500,000 refugees have returned to Syria, including some 200,000 since the fall of the Assad regime. Some 7.4 million Syrians remain internally displaced inside Syria and there are more than 6 million Syrian refugees worldwide.
